2015 IMF growth forecast: UK pulling ahead but global economy downgraded

first_img Tags: IMF The UK has managed to avoid a downgrade to its 2015 growth forecast by the International Monetary Fund. The IMF’s updated predictions released today also place the UK as the fastest economy in the G7 in 2014 with growth of 2.7 per cent. However, the UK is set to lose its “fastest G7 economy” crown to the US this year with the US expected to grow by 3.6 per cent compared the UK’s 2.4 per cent. The Eurozone is predicted to struggle with a 2015 growth forecast of 1.2 per cent. And while the UK’s predicted growth for 2015 has not been downgraded since October’s forecasts, the IMF’s 2015 global growth forecast was taken down by 0.3 per cent to 3.5 per cent.“Today’s IMF forecast shows that Britain is pulling ahead, while the global economy is being downgraded,” said chancellor George Osborne.“There’s confirmation that we grew faster than any other major economy last year, and we’re set to grow faster this year. But there are risks out there in the global economy and it’s a timely reminder that we’ve got to go on working through our long term economic plan if we want to stay ahead.”“The world economy is facing strong and complex cross currents,” said IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard.“On the one hand, major economies are benefiting from the decline in the price of oil. On the other, in many parts of the world, lower long run prospects adversely affect demand resulting in a strong undertow.” whatsapp Express KCS by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailElite HeraldExperts Discover Girl Born From Two Different SpeciesElite HeraldGive It LoveRemember These Rare Sisters? Among them are several top technology names including Apple and Microsoft. With fourth-quarter earnings projected to grow 10.6 per cent, tech is expected to be a bright spot in an earnings season that has been lacklustre so far. Profit growth expectations for S&P 500 companies, now at 3.3 per cent, are down sharply since the start of the fourth quarter following a big drop in forecasts for energy company earnings. The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), which includes Green MP Caroline Lucas, former Conservative environment minister Caroline Spelman, and green campaigning Tory MP Zac Goldsmith, as well as Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs, published a report at the weekend in which it called for all fracking activity to be halted.  The EAC stated:  “A moratorium on the extraction of unconventional gas through fracking is needed to avoid both the inconsistency with our climate change obligations and to allow the uncertainty surrounding environmental risks to be fully resolved.” The proposal was made as part of a series of suggested amendments to the Infrastructure Bill, and was not passed after Labour MPs abstained.  However, even the prospect of a moratorium hit Igas hard, with stockbroker Westhouse Securities moving to downgrade the company from a buy recommendation to a neutral rating. IGas has been eagerly awaiting the go-ahead to begin fracking for shale gas for several years now. Mark Henderson, analyst at Westhouse, said the decision to downgrade also stemmed from the decision last week by Lancashire county council planners to recommend that Cuadrilla be denied planning permission for two wells in the region, which was seen by many as another setback for the UK’s fledgling shale industry. “Combining the decision of Lancashire County Council and the EAC’s recommendation creates a major headwind for IGas, whose valuation upside is contingent on shale gas development progressing,” said Henderson. IGas declined to comment. WHO WANTED THE FRACKING MORATORIUM?Caroline SpelmanThe former environment secretary doesn’t usually appear on a list of rebels, but as  member of the Environmental Audit Committee she came out strongly against her former colleagues in government, giving weight to the committee’s concerns over the consequences of fracking. Julian HuppertHuppert proposed the amendment that would have put a moratorium on fracking. The MP for Cambridge is normally known for campaigning on civil liberties issues, tweeted his last minute attempts to persuade Labour MPs to vote for the pause from the corridors of the Commons. Joan WalleyWalley chairs the Committee, whose report into fracking was released just hours before the crunch debate. She faced complaints from across the House for how little time the committee to investigate, but held firm, and highlighted environmental fears.  Tags: Shale gas frackingcenter_img whatsapp Ad Unmute by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekUndoMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailUndoElite HeraldExperts Discover Girl Born From Two Different SpeciesElite HeraldUndoGive It LoveRemember These Rare Sisters? They include the creation of an independent infrastructure body, fast progress on the Davies airports commission, and better collaboration with local government to work through the backlog on necessary road maintenance. With a focus on the long term, ICE want the government to “future-proof” new infrastructure, make a commitment to a maintenance investment programme for flood risk management, and establish an office for resource management. They also want energy market reform to be implemented to keep down energy costs and improve decarbonisation of electricity.ICE also called for higher-quality apprenticeships, tougher Ofsted inspections and promotion of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects at school. ICE Director General, Nick Baveystock, said: “Infrastructure is the foundation of all modern societies – it not only boosts GDP and job creation but regenerates communities, connects people and places and equips future generations with desirable skills.” center_img whatsapp Share Show Comments ▼ Read This Next’A Quiet Place Part II’ Sets Pandemic Record in Debut WeekendFamily ProofHiking Gadgets: Amazon Deals Perfect For Your Next AdventureFamily ProofAmazon roars for MGM’s lion, paying $8.45 billion for studio behind JamesFamily ProofIndian Spiced Vegetable Nuggets: Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofCheese Crostini: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofHomemade Tomato Soup: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofWhat to Know About ‘Loki’ Ahead of Disney+ Premier on June 9Family ProofChicken Bao: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofBaked Sesame Salmon: Recipes Worth CookingFamily Proof last_img read more

Four of the top 10 spots went to the United States, as New York (18.8 per cent) and Aspen (16 per cent) took first and second place. And across the US, average luxury property prices rose almost 13 per cent, pushing it way ahead of the competition in Europe, which achieved an average of 2.5 per cent growth. However, London’s prime property market remained stagnant, largely due to recent changes the stamp duty. When the changes were announced, wealthy buyers rushed transactions through in order to avoid the sting.”Recent hikes in stamp duty … have curtailed the rate of price growth for properties worth over £2m in London, holding overall prime price growth at 5.1 per cent for the year,” the report said. Here are the world’s hottest luxury property markets:RankCity1.New York2.Aspen3=Bali3=Istanbul5.Abu Dhabi6.San Francisco7. Dublin8.Cape Town9.Muscat10.Los Angeles11.Auckland12.Jakarta13.Sydney14.Tel Aviv15.Bengaluru16.Amsterdam17.Miami18.Berlin19=Washington DC19=Johannesburg21.Melbourne22.Tokyo23=Verbier23=Munich25=Vancouver25=Frankfurt27.Sao Paulo28.Toronto29.Riyadh30.Doha32=Madrid32=London32=Bangkok35.Mustique  center_img whatsapp by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeHealth Gut BoostRandy Jackson: This 3 Minute Routine Transformed My HealthHealth Gut BoostMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekGundry MD Bio Complete 3 SupplementTop Heart Surgeon: This Simple Trick Helps Empty Your Bowels Every MorningGundry MD Bio Complete 3 Supplementzenherald.com20 Rules Genghis Khan’s Army Had To Live Byzenherald.comForbesThese 10 Colleges Have Produced The Most Billionaire AlumniForbesGameday NewsNASCAR Drivers Salaries Finally ReleasedGameday NewsDiscovery29+ Fascinating U.S. Navy WarshipsDiscoveryMagellan TimesThis Is Why The Roy Rogers Museum Has Been Closed For GoodMagellan Times whatsapp Tags: NULLlast_img read more

Jeff Misenti whatsapp Labour’s most electorally successful leader has re-entered the fray of British politics, warning voters that another Tory government will jeopardise the UK’s relationship with the EU.In a speech at the Excel Centre in his former constituency of Sedgefield today, Tony Blair will also praise Labour leader Ed Miliband for showing “real leadership” for ruling out a referendum on Britain’s EU membership. However, the former PM, who won three general elections, has not always been so keen to praise Labour’s leader or the direction he has chosen to take the party. So what does Tony Blair really think about Miliband? While always expressing loyalty in public and never going so far as to criticise Miliband directly, Blair’s interventions since Miliband became leader have not always been helpful. In late 2013, when Parliament was asked whether the UK should opt for a policy of intervention in Syria, Ed Miliband led his party through the lobby to defeat the government and prevent further UK military involvement. Blair was quick to voice his displeasure at the more dovish stance Miliband had decided to take on foreign policy. “I wrote before the vote that I thought we had to support action in Syria, and I said after the vote that I was disappointed by it. You know, this is something where I just have to disagree with the leadership of the party,” Blair said. The New Labour leader has also made clear his distaste for anything resembling a left of centre political strategy. In an interview with The Economist last year, Blair mused that the General Election could be one “in which a traditional left-wing party competes with a traditional right-wing party, with the traditional result”.Blair added: “I am still very much New-Labour, and Ed would not describe himself in that way… I am convinced the Labour Party succeeds best when it is in the centre ground.”In October, it was reported Blair had told friends Miliband “cannot” beat David Cameron. Miliband has been subjected to not-so-subtle criticism from other New Labour big beasts such as Peter Mandelson and Alan Milburn. With the rise of Ukip and Labour toughening its stance on immigration, Blair popped up again. In the left-leaning Progress magazine, he warned his party:[Don’t] end up chasing after the policies of a party like Ukip, who you don’t agree with, whose policies would take this country back economically in every conceivable way, and who, ultimately, at the heart of what they do, have a rather nasty core of prejudice that none of us believe in, which you’ve actually got to take on and fight. So the way to deal with this is to deal with it by what you believe.Blair and Miliband have fundamentally different visions of where the Labour Party needs to go to become an election-winning party of government. Miliband believes, in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, the centre-ground of British politics has moved to the left, with pubic attitude more receptive to state intervention in markets. Blair sees Britain as remaining a fundamentally centrist country and is more content to live in peace with the Thatcherite settlement of open markets and privatisation, but adding greater to social spending to ensure social justice.Despite being the most successful leader in the Labour Party’s history, Blair’s offer of £1,000 donations toward campaigns was rejected by two Labour candidates. If Miliband fails to capture the keys to Number 10, Blair may be vindicated – but if he triumphs, many aspects much of conventional wisdom of how the British economy should function could be challenged.Later today, Blair will attack David Cameron for bowing to pressure from Ukip and Eurosceptic media, offering an EU referendum should he win a second term. The controversial former Prime Minister will say the possibility of Brexit would leave “unpredictability hanging over the British economy”. Boozy Britain? London is sobering up – and so is the rest of the country

first_imgLondon is the soberest region in the UK, according to new data, showing drinking habits among adults, released today by the Office for National Statistics. Nearly a third of respondents from the Capital said they did not drink any alcohol – far higher than any other region.   Across the UK, 21 per cent said that they do not drink alcohol at all, an increase on the 19 per cent of non-drinkers in 2005.   In Scotland and the north east over a third of the adults polled, who drank in the week before they were interviewed, admitted to binge drinking. However, London was placed in the middle of the pack with 24 per cent of adults revealing they had indulged in a binge drinking session. Younger drinkers are more likely to binge drink with 19 per cent of 25 to 44-year-olds and 18 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds binge drinking in the week before they were interviewed, while just 4 per cent of 65-year-olds and over hit the bottle.  So, what is causing this drop off in drinking? The ONS said one possible factor could be that underage drinking has been targeted in recent years. The body said: “In 2003 changes were made to the conditions for licensed premises in England and Wales, which made it more difficult for underage drinkers to purchase alcohol themselves. Since then, schemes such as Challenge 21 and Challenge 25 have also been introduced in an effort to reduce the availability of alcohol to underage drinkers. “Although it is not possible to assess the scale to which such factors may have had an impact on the availability of alcohol to underage drinkers, it is likely that whencombined these factors have contributed somewhat to the reduction in drinking among young adults.” The government’s alcohol strategy defines binge drinking for men as drinking more than eight units of alcohol, about three pints of strong beer. For women, it’s drinking more than six units of alcohol, equivalent to two large glasses of wine. His new company Leni Gas Cuba has acquired a five per cent share in Cuba focused oil and gas firm Petro Australis, which owns a huge stake in an oil-rich region on the north coast of Cuba. “This is LGC’s first acquisition that relates to Cuba and we see Petro Australis as an exciting entry point into the Cuban oil and gas sector,” Lenigas said in a statement. Earlier this year communications giant WPP also revealed it was about to set up shop there – an unprecedented step among the world’s major advertising agencies. The company partnered with state-owned Palco Group to make the move, in anticipation of the new business opportunities likely to open up. Already US President Barack Obama has helped relax some parts of the US economic embargo against Cuba, and in the coming months and years we are likely to see increasing numbers of companies turn their attention to the communist-led island. Here are some of the sectors set to benefit the most. TourismAlready a popular holiday destination among Europeans, Cuba will become even more of a tourist hotspot once Americans are granted free travel access there.  Some of the island’s hotels have been developed by European and South American hotel companies, but soon American firms such as Hilton, Marriott and Starwood will likely start setting their sights on some of Cuba’s most beautiful regions.AgricultureIn 2005, a $15m deal was brokered by Kathleen Blanco, then governor of the state of Louisiana, to boost agricultural exports to Cuba. This was possible because of a 2001 change to US trade embargo that allowed US companies to sell some food products. Now, Louisiana amounts for almost 30 per cent of Cuban-bound agricultural exports, according to the World Trade Center of New Orleans. Poultry and rice are two of the main products it exports there.  As restrictions continue to relax, US agricultural companies will look towards Cuba as an expanding export opportunity.AirlinesBefore ties were severed, Eastern and Pan Am were the main airlines flying between the US and Cuba. These disappeared a long time ago, and once US tourists are allowed to visit the island freely there’ll be a race to become the main provider of flights to Havana. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines are both probable contenders. TelecommunicationsAn exception to the US embargo allows telecommunications providers to establish basic infrastructure in Cuba, so that the island has access to essential internet services.  Given that some US companies have taken the initial step of establishing themselves on the island, it will be easier to take business investment up a notch once the embargo is broken down enough to allow more commercial operations to go ahead there. CarsThe retro cars Cubans drive around in aren’t just for the benefit of tourists hoping to feel like they have returned to the 1960s. For years, Cubans have been severely limited in the cars they can buy, with the government often opting for an official car supplier. Under the system, Cubans have only been able to buy a car from a single company at any one time. When Cuba eventually rids itself for this rule, a new market will open up for car-makers, who will most likely flock to the island and make the most of the mass transition from old to new. People rushed to lock in record-low mortgage rates amid mounting speculation that the Old Lady could be gearing up to hike interest rates. The gap between supply and demand widened, with the supply of UK homes falling 15 per cent annually. Consequently there were nearly 12 buyers chasing every property which came onto the market. This was particularly acute in London, where the ratio was 20:1.Read more: WPP boss Sir Martin Sorrell shrugs off mounting fears over China’s economyHowever, it said recent global market turmoil is “good news” for prospective buyers as it may have delayed the timing for a rate hike. The City had been expecting the Bank of England to raise rates next March, but this has now been pushed back to next summer.”We saw a surge in activity when Mark Carney announced an interest rate rise was on the cards, as people looked to take advantage of some of the lowest mortgage rates on record and fix at this level before they increased,” Paul Smith, chief executive of Haart, said.”Now the economic landscape has changed following the market slowdown in China we expect greater calm on the demand side, but true balance will not be achieved until more homes start to come onto the market.” center_img Thursday 27 August 2015 5:07 pm Video Carousel – cityam_native_carousel – 426 00:00/00:50 LIVERead More Ad Unmute by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailUndoSwift VerdictChrissy Metz, 39, Shows Off Massive Weight Loss In Fierce New PhotoSwift VerdictUndoPost FunKate & Meghan Are Very Different Mothers, These Photos Prove ItPost FunUndoComedyAbandoned Submarines Floating Around the WorldComedyUndoMoguldom NationFather Of 2 Sues Los Angeles Hospital After Wife Dies During ChildbirthMoguldom NationUndoMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekUndoEquity MirrorThey Drained Niagara Falls — They Weren’t Prepared For This Sickening DiscoveryEquity MirrorUndoGameday NewsNBA Wife Turns Heads Wherever She GoesGameday NewsUndozenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comUndo Bank of England governor Mark Carney’s interest rate rise comments prompted a flurry of house buying in July Tags: Bank of England UK house priceslast_img read more

News / Industry blow as Des Vertannes resigns as chief of IATA Cargo

first_imgBy Alex Lennane 29/03/2014 Des Vertannes, the charming, diplomatic, even-keeled, much-liked and well-respected head of IATA Cargo, has announced his resignation from the industry. He leaves the association in June.He joined IATA – then renowned for its lack of interest in cargo, an unhappy staff and unpopular director general – exactly four years prior to his leaving date.Defended and ring-fenced initially from the worst of the association by the Cargo Committee, led by former Emirates SkyCargo chief Ram Menen, he set about changing the role IATA played in cargo – certainly a thankless task.At the time, Mr Vertannes said he would do the job until he had made a difference. With e-freight now on its way, a modernisation of IATA’s approach to ‘agents’, the creation of GACAG, a healthier relationship with FIATA, a proper environmental agenda for cargo, a voice for ground handlers, a sustainable agenda and other improvements too numerous to mention, the industry can safely say that yes, he has made a difference.Previously cargo chief for Etihad and Gulf Air, he has also striven to boost the air freight business in general; to give it a wider focus to help companies grow the industry rather than steal a shrinking amount of business from each other.Mr Vertannes, a true gentleman, who has worked in air freight since 1970, is known not only for his diplomatic nature, but also for wearing his heart on his sleeve: no other industry leader could trigger an outbreak of moist eyes among grown men like he could. He has made no secret of his jealousy of close friend Ram Menen’s recent retirement. While Mr Menen now travels the world seeing friends and places, Mr Vertannes (or ‘poor Des’ as he has become known, owing to his relentlessly difficult job) has been stuck travelling the world, soothing forwarders, carriers and Customs, making speeches and boosting business. As the news of his departure emerged, tributes began to pour in.Stan Wraight, executive director of SASI, said: “With everything that is happening today in our air cargo world, the pressures for change are enormous if we are to remain relevant. We have all been struggling for years to impress on the industry the need to recruit and train young leaders, as the current guard will leave. And now we lose Des to retirement, one of the true leaders out there.“He is able to get people motivated just through his passion, intelligence and eloquence, and that comes about when you couple years of experience and know-how with charm and intellect. IATA and the industry needs more Des Vertannes, not less.“He will be missed, but I hope that he will enjoy retirement along with his wife Gloria and their many kids and grandchildren. Of all people, he has done his share and deserves the time off. IATA and the industry’s loss is his family’s gain.”Mr Menen said: “Des is a hard act to follow. He is one of the most knowledgeable, passionate and hard-working people I have met. He is true visionary and icon. He is also one of the best salesmen I have come across – he can sell ‘ice to Eskimos’ with the greatest of ease.“Des is what IATA needed when the industry was at a crossroads and had no definitive direction. He is well-respected by every element of the industry and has had the challenging task to start the modernisation process.“His list of achievements over the years, when documented, will need many pages to record. I could go on and on – but I am glad he can now spend time with his family.“Like me, I am sure he is going to enjoy the next phase of his life. I wish him the best and am delighted to welcome him to the retired senior citizens club!”The Loadstar wishes him all the very best for his more than well-deserved retirement. The industry – and all the people in it, who count him as a dear friend – will miss him sorely.last_img read more

News / Ukraine-Russia joint venture airline Ruslan brushes off sanctions fears

first_imgThe company markets a fleet of 17 Antonov AN124-100 freighters, operated by both airlines, which specialise in transporting out-sized, heavy and project cargo. Although conditions remain volatile for the niche market that the AN124-100 continues to serve, Mr Goodisman said that Ruslan was seeing an increase in enquiries.“We still have a gap to fill since military work has dried up, but commercial work is on the rise, probably reflecting the general cargo market,” he said. “It is expensive but that’s not a deciding factor. We operate in a market which is often time-critical, so companies find the expense of chartering an AN124-100 is justified, because ultimately it will carry cargo no other plane can.”Transporting equipment for the aerospace and oil and gas sectors made up 40% of Ruslan’s market last year. The remainder of its trade comprised clients in the maritime, mining, vehicle and defence industries, with some NGO and intermodal work.“The market has been changing recently. There used to be a lot of cargo going into the US but now there is a lot coming back out from the US,” Mr Goodisman said. He added that there was also a good flow of cargo from Europe into Asia.Although chartering AN124-100s is an expensive option – customers are looking at about $260,000 to $270,000 for a short run, with costs rising to over $1 million for a long-distance trip – its ability to shift heavy cargo at short notice has kept Ruslan firmly in the cargo game.“These aircraft are understood to provide a valuable alternative under certain circumstances for project cargo,” Mr Goodisman said. “They provide value, otherwise people wouldn’t charter them.”The AN 124-100 can carry anything weighing up to 120 tonnes – the maximum commercial load – that can be contained in a cargo cabin, including a single shipment of up to 50 tonnes.Earlier this year, Ruslan handled one of its largest and heaviest ever pieces of cargo – a deck loader for the Boeing 747 Dreamlifter. The 109,000kg deck loader, which is used for loading and unloading parts from the 747 Dreamlifter, was transported 3,500 km, between two American Air Force bases.Other operators of the aircraft include Polet, which is currently undergoing a series of court cases following accusations that it is not paying its debts for aircraft, and which have seen it being ordered on occasion to ground its fleet, and UAE-based Maximus, which has one of the type on its books. Russian-Ukraine joint venture Ruslan International has said that the tense political situation between the two countries is not affecting either its services or operations.“The joint venture between Antonov Airlines and Volga-Dnepr carries on. It has been continuing without change since 2006,” Ruslan International’s business development manager Michael Goodisman told The Loadstar. “There are no issues, including for operations in and out of the US.”A few questions had been raised by customers about whether services might be affected by sanctions, he said, but he added that Ruslan International had been able to offer reassurance that both airlines could operate freely. The EU and US have imposed sanctions on a number of Russian individuals and entities for what they describe as roles taken in the Ukraine crisis. Ruslan International, as a UK-registered company, looks likely to remain unaffected by such sanctions. By Tom Westcott 29/07/2014last_img read more
